History Happy Hour Book Talk: The Last Emperor of Mexico
The Yakima-Morelia Sister City Association and the Yakima Valley Library are hosting another History Happy Hour at Gilbert Cellars Winery!
On October 8th, we will be hosting a History Happy Hour event. Similar to the Tequila Wars event in February, there will be a historic overview of one point in Mexican history, in this case the story of the Maximilians’ reign of terror in Mexico. Carlos, the archivist at the Yakima Valley Library, will share the story of Maximilian and Carlota, the European aristocrats who stumbled into power in Mexico and faced bloody consequences. In the 1860s, Napoleon Ill was intent on curbing the rise of American imperialism and persuaded a young Austrian archduke and a Belgian princess to leave Europe and become the emperor and empress of Mexico.
This will be one of two events Carlos is hosting to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and bring history into the community! Both events are opportunities to connect, ask questions, and join the conversation.
While there, you’ll also have a chance to get a free library card!Bilingual Bibliotheca will also be collecting donations of Spanish-Language books for their literary project!
